BY MALEK APPIAH AFFUM

The staff of Child Rights International, Ghana (CRI) has made a cash donation to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) as emergency support to children and families affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The Executive Director of CRI, Bright Appiah, made the donation during a visit to some affected communities in the Volta Region on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

Mr. Appiah also promised to provide 10,000 exercise books, notebooks, and bags to children in the affected areas.

Receiving the donation, Seji Saji Amedonu, Deputy Director-General of NADMO, commended CRI for extending its humanitarian support to the victims, especially the children, and promised that it would be used to support the welfare of the children affected.

Some members of the District Disaster Committee, the District Assembly, and Heads of Departments and Agencies witnessed the presentation.

After the brief presentation ceremony, the CRI team visited safe havens, St. Kizito Centre, and Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region where residents who have been rendered homeless by the spillage currently reside.

The Executive Director, Bright Appiah, engaged with both residents and children, who expressed their concerns and extended petitions for help.

The flooding has impacted education, health, mobility, shelter, and access to food for the children in the affected communities.

Bright Appiah also called on all well-meaning Ghanaians, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and benevolent organizations to extend their support to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in providing relief and protection for children and women who are particularly vulnerable in these difficult times to alleviate their plights.
